Poured concrete vs. concrete block

A poured (cast-in-place) concrete wall is a continuous reinforced structure that excels at tall walls, heavy surcharge loads like a driveway or vehicle above, and situations where a slim footprint matters. Reinforced concrete block (CMU) builds up in courses and can be faced with stone or stucco for a finished look. Both can be steel-reinforced and engineered far beyond what a dry-stacked stone wall can carry.

Why engineering matters most here

Concrete’s strength is wasted without drainage and proper footings — and on North Texas expansive clay that’s exactly where walls fail. JCL designs the footing for the soil, adds rebar to spec, and builds in weep holes or a drain system so water can’t build hydrostatic pressure behind the wall. Taller walls are engineered and permitted with the city.

When to choose concrete

Concrete is the right call for tall retaining walls, walls holding a driveway or structure, foundation-protection walls, and anywhere maximum strength and longevity outweigh the natural-stone look (though block can be stone-faced).
