How Retaining Wall Construction Works

A good retaining wall is mostly what you don’t see. Here’s how JCL builds one — and why each step matters on North Texas clay.

Base, drainage, and backfill

We excavate to firm subgrade and build a compacted base, then set the wall with gravel backfill and a drainage system — weep points or a French drain — behind it. This is the single most important part: it relieves the water pressure that destroys most walls.

Structure and reinforcement

The wall is battered into the slope and, where height or load requires, reinforced with geo-grid, rebar, or a poured footing engineered for the soil. Taller walls are engineered to spec and permitted with the city — we handle that for you.

Finish and cleanup
