New Milsap Wall, Raised Stone Wall and Bed Borders in Benbrook, TX
A corner-lot front yard in Benbrook got three pieces of stonework at once. A new Milsap wall now holds the slope by the sidewalk, the existing low wall was built up higher, and the flower beds along the house are edged in the same stone.

Before & after
Before and after: one yard, three changes
Each pair is shot from the same spot. The bare corner slope now has a wall, the low stone wall is taller and straighter, and the beds have a stone edge.

A front yard doing three jobs badly
This is a corner lot, and the front yard rises from the sidewalk toward the house. At the corner there was no wall at all. The slope ran straight down to the walk, and the soil on it had worn bare under the tree.
Along the front there was already a stone wall, but it was only a course or two high. The lawn above it still sloped hard toward the street, so the wall held very little back.
Closer to the house, the flower beds had no edge. Grass and bed simply ran into each other, and the owners had marked the line they wanted in orange paint.
The brief from the email was simple: add a new Milsap wall, extend the height of the existing wall, and add flower bed borders, in stone that ties the whole yard together.
How the Benbrook work ran
-
Free on-site estimate
Robert walked the yard, measured all three pieces of work and gave one firm price for the lot.
-
Permits
JCL checked what the City of Benbrook requires and handled any permit the walls needed.
-
New corner wall
The bare slope by the sidewalk was cut back and a new Milsap wall built along it, returning around the corner of the lot.
-
Raising the existing wall
The low front wall was built up in matching Milsap stone to a taller, straight face, holding a flatter lawn behind it.
-
Bed borders
The flower beds were edged with stone set along the owners’ marked line, curving with the beds.
-
Clean-up
Spoil hauled off, the lawn and walks left clean, and the fresh soil above the walls ready for grass.
Why it lasts
What it takes to raise a wall properly
Adding height to a retaining wall is not just stacking more stone on top. A taller wall holds more soil, and the soil pushes harder, so the work has to account for that.
More height, more load
The pressure behind a wall grows quickly with its height. A wall built up higher has to be solid enough for the extra soil it now holds.
Water with somewhere to go
DFW clay swells when it is wet. The new walls have weep points through the face so water drains out instead of building up behind the stone.
One stone, one look
Using Milsap for the new wall, the raised wall and the borders makes the yard read as one design, and it sits well against the brick.
A warranty behind it
Every JCL wall carries a 5-year warranty in writing, and the price quoted at the estimate is the price on the bill.

Benbrook retaining wall questions
Can you make an existing retaining wall taller?
Often, yes, if the existing wall is sound. It has to be solid enough to carry the extra soil a taller wall holds. Robert checks the existing wall at the free estimate and tells you whether to build on it or start fresh.
Why raise a wall instead of leaving the slope?
A low wall under a steep lawn holds very little back, and the slope above it keeps washing toward the street. Raising the wall flattens the lawn behind it, which makes it easier to mow and slows erosion.
Do you install stone flower bed borders?
Yes, as part of retaining wall work like this job. A stone border in the same material as the walls gives the beds a clean, lasting edge and ties the yard together.
What is Milsap stone?
Milsap is a natural Texas sandstone in tan, gold and brown tones. It is dense and weathers well, and mortared it makes a solid face that suits the brick homes common in Benbrook.
Do you work in Benbrook?
Yes. Benbrook is on the southwest side of Fort Worth, and JCL builds and replaces retaining walls across the western side of the metroplex.
How much does a job like this cost?
It depends on the length and height of each wall and the run of the borders. JCL gives one firm price at the free on-site estimate, and that price is the bill.
